Diamond – the emperor of gemstones – is also the purest derivative in mineralogy- Unlike almost other minerals and gemstones, which are complex carbon-silicates with metal impurities, diamond is simply a carbon allotrope. It’s interesting that the same element that creates coal and graphite also creates diamond – with just a re-arrangement of the atoms. Diamond is the hardest known mineral, and one of the poorest conductors of heat and electricity of any known material. Its industrial applications range from industrial cutters to knives which can grind other softer minerals, but of course, its greatest and most traditional use has been as jewellery – in rings, pendants, bracelets, and studded with other valuable metals like gold or silver.
